the sky is blue because of a process called Rayleigh scattering, where tiny gas molecules in earth's atmosphere scatter the shorter, smaller waves of blue light from the sun more effectively than other colors. when sunlight enters the atmosphere, it collides with these molecules and the blue light waves get scattered in all directions, filling the sky and reaching our eyes from every angle. sunlight is made of all colors: white light from the sun contains all the colors of the rainbow, but we see the sky as blue because of how the atmosphere interacts with these colors. blue light scatters more: blue and violet light have shorter, smaller wavelengths, which are scattered more by the tiny nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the air. our eyes are more sensitive to blue: while violet light is scattered even more, our eyes are more sensitive to blue light. we see the scattered blue light: the blue light is scattered all across the sky, so when you look up, you are seeing this scattered blue light coming from every direction.
